On gen1 cars, the light is sourced by the light filament source which is located behind the center dash panel ( behind the a/c controller). It is a fiber optic cable that is sourced by a single bulb that powers all the dash switches. On gen2 cars, it is a bulb located in the shift gate housing.

However, I think you will have to take everything out in order to look inside or even replace the light bulb. I just left it as is.yes they do. I have the same problem but it sometimes decides to turn on every now and then. The lights themselves aren't hard to change it's just getting to them that's the problem. you have to completely take off the center console but other than that it is fixable. T.
