May 31, 2017 · In 4WD Limited and SR5 models, the 4Runner has open diffs front and rear but includes A-TRAC which simulates front and rear lockers by braking selectively. This is surprisingly effective. No driveshaft turning=no power=no lockup from the locker. You might hear some ratcheting for it tho, this is normal. It works pretty well. For the trails that you'll need full armor/lift/tires/winch - the locker starts to be a more important part of the formula.As for rear locker, it would help in a sense if you planned on playing around in sand/mud in a pre-runner like fashion. Essentially adding a rear locker pretty much will make it as capable as the Tacoma pre-runner is. (2wd truck with factory rear locker and 4x4 suspension).
