The rifle load was 70 grains of BP and the Carbine load was 55 grains of the same powder. Thus the designations 45-70-405 and 45-55-405. 491 posts · Joined 2006. #1 · Aug 18, 2010. I have a new TC Contender 45/70. I shot some of my reloads that are in the "trapdoor" load range through it. A BTB LFN 405 gr over a good dose of 3031. The recoil was more than a little "snappy", more like "brisk" and exhilarating to say the least. In my Marlin 1895 the same load is pretty "snappy".The SAMMI MAP for the 45/70 Government cartridge out of deference to the M1873 Springfield Rifle is 28,000 psi [transducer or strain gauge] . The 7 gr/52 gr BP load runs close to the same or about 1,000 psi higher than the psi of the same powder loaded at straight 70 gr. ... The 70 gr powder charge was heavily compressed and the granulation was ...Steve - H335 is a pretty poor choice to load .45-70 with. H-335 is better suited to .223 and similar use. For those 405 grain bullets, I'd strongly suggest IMR-3031. You can load about 175 rounds with only one pound of powder, and you'll like the results. I'd save that H-335 for other calibers.One .45-70 load approximates the performance of the original .45-70 Govt black powder loading of a 405 grain bullet (.307 BC) at 1350 feet per second while the other is a 325gr Hornady LEVERevolution factory load (.230 BC). The .30-06 Springfield load is a 150 grain Nosler Partition (.387 BC) at 3,000 feet per second.

I have a small game load for my 45-70 where I take a cast 268gr bullet at .453" and paper patch up to .461" @270gr and I load with 5 grains of bullseye and a 1/2gr Dacron filler on top bullet seated to 2.550" with a roll crimp. I chronograph these loads at 770FPS and recoil if you want to call it ...A 1 MOA group at 1000 yards with a 45/70 or any black powder cartridge rifle is very impressive and anything less is scary good !!! Although suitable loads for the 45-70 could be developed with TAC, it is evident that the two sources I know of chose X-Terminator to develop loads for the 45-70.
