MISO covers the largest geographical range of any independent system operator (ISO) in the U.S. As the ISO of the electric grid in this region, MISO manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long-distance power lines. To do so, MISO develops rules so that the wholesale electricity transmission system operates reliably and safely.MISO operates the transmission system and a centrally dispatched market in 15 states in the Midwest and the South. It serves as the reliability coordinator for additional systems outside of its market area.
