Worked fine after that. The inner cable should pull out of housing which makes it easy to lubricate cable. yeah - the inner cable should pull out from the speedo side (the white clip).

Pull out the high beam indicator light and unclip the wiring harness behind the speedo. At that point I highly recommend replacing the bulbs behind the speedo and gas gauge with LED's.Obviously the speedometer cable gets a lot more use. and a lot more wear than clutch or throttle cables.
